(Special Section) The Hymn as Protest Song in England and its Empire, 1819–1919

Hymns played a role in envoicing the politics of protest England long before their integration established Church – and do so to this day. Yet it was nineteenth-century radical movements that embraced hymn as many ways ideal musical form. From bloody field Peterloo secularising South Place Society, from mass meetings Chartists top-down productions Fabian socialists, century resounded with increasingly familiar music.
